Wasungen Owned DKs
The family we CHOOSE.
Karlos vom Klepelshagener Forst
D1, VJP 70, HZP 185, AZP 1, VGP 1/336 CACIT Reserve, VStP 56B, HN, LN, SJ, VBR, HD A2, OCD frei, FW: V1-CAC (Anwartschaft Deutscher Champion VDH) 81lbs.
Karlos is an impressive V1 male, the sort of dog that commands your eye and your total attention. Known as the DogFather, he has that WOW factor. He is a big, tall male weighing in at 81lbs. He is calm in everyday life and is unmatched in temperament as a family dog. In Utah he lives with 5 kids, 2 female DKs, and a male miniature schnauzer. He is a total gentleman in the home with all big and small including visitors.
Karlos is very easy to handle. He spent the first 4 years of his life hunting nearly every day in Germany. Rudiger Stilgenbauer, owner of the vom Klepelshagener Forst kennel in Germany has noted “everything is easy with Karlos. He is always there when you need him.” Karlos has been described as one that will go into the water in any weather and reliably chokes all predators in the field. He works with a high nose, always in contact with his handler. Here in the US from Utah to South Dakota, it’s noted that Karlos enjoys working in total lockstep with his handler and other dogs as team. Karlos has a very dense black roaned coat, strong and correct bite, and true form. He has been bred by the Germans and has proven to produce correct and promising puppies.
Karlos has spent many days in the field and is proven across land and water including fur, waterfowl, upland game, and blood tracking. He will gladly dispatch varmin and actively hunted wild boar in Germany.
He will be used primarily for von Wasungen owned females and a select group of approved outside DK females.
Braya vom Hochland
D1, S1, FW: V (SG1 Pup), HD A2 60lbs.
Braya or as we call her, “Rey” is a once in a lifetime type dog. She is equal performance and beauty. Bred by DK pioneer Tyler Smith of vom Hochland Kennel in Saratoga Springs, Utah, we patiently waited 1 1/2 years to bring her home. Her mother Jinx vom Keljer is widely considered the matriarch of DKs here in the Western US. Her Father Peyton von King’s Crossing is also one of the most beautiful and accomplished DK studs in North America. As a great representation of the DK breed, Peyton was featured on the cover of Gun Dog Magazine and passes his remarkable drive and beauty onto each of his puppies.
Rey has an excellent temperament and is very cooperative. She is the type of dog that maintains total eye contact with her handler yet is willing to get out and demonstrate her independence and confidence. She has a soft temperament in the home; yet, just the right amount of hardness in the field. She is a cuddler and seeks human contact and praise above all else. Give her some love and a treat and you have won her over. She is the perfect balance of calm and go.
While hunting chukars in the desert, Rey will actively search far and wide. Its not unusual to cast Rey into deep canyons for a 250 yard search eliminating the need to hoof it down their on your own. She will pick apart a canyon with ease and never loses steam. After a period of adjustment, in South Dakota and Oregon she quickly adjusted working closer to outsmart those wild roosters. She is the first to hit the water to retrieve downed fowl. She has pointed and retrieved chukar, pheasant, quail, grouse, and Hungarian partridge. She has also retrieved ducks in bitter cold Idaho rivers. She truly is a versatile hunting companion. She will sit a blind, walk at heal jump shooting ducks on the river, work a South Dakota field in close range and expand to an impressive search in chukar country.
Due to reasons non-genetic and non-environmental, Rey received a hysterectomy in Jan of 2021. She will not be able to breed. As a perfectly put together high “V” dog this is a shame. She really is one of the prettiest DKs in the US. She will continue to live on as the ultimate hunting and family companion here at Wasungen Kennel.
Isobel vom Hidden Creek
D1 (4h Point), HZP 184, FW: SG, HD A2 61lbs.
Isobel serves as Wasungen Kennel’s foundation bitch and will be the mother of our “A” litter. We call her “Izzy,” and from the day we brought her home she has been all business. She drips with natural ability and it has been our goal to extract every bit of potential out of her. Izzy comes from respected DK breeder, George Desharnais in Alabama and his kennel vom Hidden Creek. We fell in love with the prospect of Izzy joining our home only after falling in love with Beretta vom Hidden Creek and Cole vom Hidden Creek, her parents. George was a pleasure to work with and has become a lasting friend and mentor.
Izzy too has an excellent temperament and was raised first in John Jr.’s home around his 5 kids. Izzy’s first opportunity at game as a young pup resulted in sticking and holding point naturally right out the gate. That is pretty normal for a DK but she has always performed a touch above and scored a 4h in pointing at her Derby. Her nose too has always been a standout. This was demonstrated in later tests as she searched behind live duck with surgeon like precision.
Izzy is actively worked as a hunting dog having hunted chukar, pheasant, Hungarian partridge and grouse. She loves the water and has hunted both ducks and geese. Izzy is around turkeys, chickens, and horses on a daily basis and has learned quickly the difference between game she is to pursue and game she is to leave alone. She is cooperative and easy to train.
In order to complete her required testing for breeding, we traveled to New Mexico in 2019 and tested in an HZP. Amongst a group of Deutsch Drahthaars Izzy scored the highest score of the day at 184. She put on a nearly perfect performance. Izzy works with a high head, a keen sense of smell and uses the wind to her advantage while maintaining lock step with her handler.
We are looking forward to the arrival of our “A” litter in April 2021 and expect Izzy to be an excellent mother. These puppies will exhibit great cooperation, confirmation, and drive all qualities passed on by both their mother and father.
